MERCEDES-BENZ 250SL Pagoda
From a
deceased estate; enticing project; fully resprayed; professional engine rebuild
including fuel injection system; hard top; lots of new parts
Sold
by ourselves in 2016 to our vendor's late husband as a restoration project, this
car had come in from the US with paperwork to show that all taxes had been
paid.
Dating from 1967, this left-hand drive automatic transmission
250SL spent most of its life in California. It was acquired by its previous
owner in around 2004 from a private collection in California at which point
it was a complete and running car.
Being
a dry state car, the body has remained in extremely good order. As you can
see, it has been stripped and resprayed in red to a good, if not
concours standard.
The engine was sent away for a professional
rebuild and has been reinstated in the car but not fired-up. The engineer
who did the work also advised us that the injection system had a £1,000
overhaul, although there is no paperwork to substantiate this, or the reassembly
work on the engine.
The seats were retrimmed and fortunes spent on new
chrome, including a set of new stack headlights and a new exhaust
system.
The car is a standard SL, not the less appealing California model
which does away with the hood (less good for the UK climate). The hood frame is
present but it will need a fresh cover. The car also comes with its attractive
Pagoda hard-top painted in body colour.
With the vast majority of the
money spent, this project could be completed with little more in the way of
expenditure and looks excellent value at the suggested guide
price.
