1963 Daimler SP250
SOLD
£31,360
Extremely smart example; wires; few miles
on professional engine overhaul; rack conversion; original upholstery; a lovely
car
Purchased by the vendor way back in 1996, this splendid
SP250 has been much loved and cared for.
Little is known of its history
prior to that - the vendor discovering the car for sale in Bristol, it's
previous owner having given it some restoration work and reuniting the car with
its original registration number (non transferable). The V5C declares it as
manufactured in 1963 but the chassis number indicates that it is a 1960
model..
A spreadsheet in the comprehensive history file (since 1995)
shows all that has been done to the car, turning it into the prime example we
have on offer here.
In 1995 a new clutch was fitted by the previous owner
and two years later a new radiator and sundries. In addition to numerous small
detail items, new seat foams were installed in 1998, an electric fan added in
'99 and a new fuel tank and rear springs in 2000. Later that year the brakes
were basically replaced and in October of that year a new tonneau was
fitted.
In January 2002, the car was treated to a full professional
respray in Ferrari Rosso Corsa, the result of an incident when the bonnet flew
open (a common issue by all accounts) which has been properly rectified and
secured with a chain to prevent it happening again! The colour really suits the
car and has stood the test of time well, with just a few very minor
blemishes.
In July that year, the engine received a top-end rebuild by
marque experts Cable Autos and then 4,000 miles later in 2006, Cable Autos
undertook a full rebuild which has proved most successful. The engine is
certainly very quiet and shows 50psi hot when bowling along.
A year later
in 2007 Bryan Purves fitted a set of wire wheels - with splined adaptorsand new
tyres. The adaptors were subsequently replaced with the correct splined hubs.
Over the next few years the car received more regular care until March 2015 saw
a major overhaul of the suspension. This included a steering rack conversion, a
rear suspension upgrade to telescopics and a full front suspension rebuild -
this time by Damiler SP 250 specialist Robert Grinter, which has truly
transformed the driving experience. The bill for this work was £5,605. In April
2016 he also fitted new brake and clutch pipes, rear bearings as well as other
work adding a further £2,382 to the total spend to date.
Then, it had a
new hood bag, new seat belts, Lucas voltage regulator, fuel pump, sports
coil...the list goes on - all indicative of its careful and fastidious owner
maintaining and improving the car.
All bills are included in the file
which also has an old style V5 and a full factory Workshop manual.
The
car was driven some 25 miles to the sale and is every bit as nice as it looks in
the photos. The interior is largely original and looks lovely. The car is only
for sale due to work and time commitments on the vendor's farm.
