1987 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands
SOLD
£22,960
Quite possibly one of the best 280 Brooklands we have
seen, an early car number 35, it was supplied new in November 1987 to its first
owner who kept the car until November 1995. Our vendor acquired the car from
Essex (its spiritual home!) in February 2014 from a fastidious owner who kept it
in a heated, carpeted garage from where it was shipped out to Ontario, Canada to
our vendor’s Canadian home where he runs a classic car service and restoration
business Classic Automotive Repair in Kingston, Ontario.
During his six years of ownership, the car was fully and
comprehensively restored after some limited, dry summer use covering only around
2,000 miles. The restoration was comprehensive and included a bare metal strip
and repaint with the engine, gearbox, rear axle, glass, interior and front
suspension all removed.
The limited amount of corrosion found was cut out and
replaced with new steel then painted to a high standard by Town and Country
Chrysler’s body shop in Perth, Ontario this included a new stripe kit with
lacquer sprayed over the stripe to prevent any build up of polish at a cost of
some $20,000 CAD (£11,000!).
Reassembly included any black parts including bumpers and
window trims etc painted with Ultraviolet protected satin black. The rear window
was re-fitted with new seals, the interior was refitted with sound deadening
under the carpet, a new head lining installed and the sunroof greased and
refitted, all the windows were refitted with all new parts where necessary. A
new windscreen was also fitted, sourced from the UK and shipped out.
Brand new Hella right hand drive head lights were
installed with LED and air horns fitted. The rear axle was re-sealed, cleaned
and painted, new rear springs and shock absorbers fitted and the petrol tank
restored and painted with new stainless tank straps. A brand-new Bosch fuel pump
and bracket were installed along with new accumulator and fuel filter.
The engine was stripped and steam cleaned with new big end
bearings, new rings, crankshaft resized and balanced, bores machined and a new
oil pump and gaskets fitted. The cylinder head was machined with new valve seats
for unleaded fuel and a fast road cam fitted with new bearings. The sump was
also replaced as were the engine mounts, fuel injectors clutch and gearbox
checked and fitted with new gaskets. The cooling system received new silicone
hosing, a new water pump and viscous fan were also fitted.
The car was completed and tested with no real road mileage
covered since and was shipped back to the vendor’s UK base in July 2019 by
Golden Chariots and has laid unused since. The Capri, as we understand wants for
nothing and has a history file including a photographic documentation of the
rebuild, receipts dating back to 1993, old tax discs, V5C, NOVA
certificate, and 20 old MOTs dating back to 1993 confirming the Brookland’s
low mileage of 63,424 miles. The current MOT is valid until 10th June
2021 with no advisories recorded. A scan through its MOT history show it has
covered less than 4,000 miles in the last 14 years.
A rare car when new and even rarer now and one coveted by
many fast Ford collectors.
