1979 MGB Roadster
Chrome bumper conversion;
long MOT; solid MGB just recommissioned following several years in
storage
Twelve years after they had launched it, MG were forced to
redesign the ever-popular MGB in 1974 due to tougher crash safety legislation in
America, one of the key markets for the car.
The old chrome bumpers were deleted in favour of new
rubber items front and rear and the ride height was raised by one inch to bring
the headlamps up to the new level now required. The interior was also redesigned
with a more modern fascia and improved heating and ventilation. Otherwise the
car was still substantially the same as it had always been, with classically
elegant bodywork and a gutsy 1.8-litre engine which gave 100mph
performance.
However, there is no doubt that the chrome bumper models
look better and as it is a fairly straightforward job to change them, many
owners have taken the opportunity to do so, as is the case with the car. First
registered in March 1979, there is no history with this Roadster but we are told
that it had been in storage for several years before the current keeper acquired
it in June last year from a person who had owned it for 13 years.
Appearing to be in very sound condition both above and
below, it was recently recommissioned following its period in storage, flying
through its MOT in July this year with just a couple of minor advisories (slight
play in track rod ends; tyres slightly perished). Starting promptly and running
nicely as we moved it around for these photos, it looks tidy under the bonnet
and it seems likely that it has had a good chunk of money spent on it at some
time in the not-too-distant past.
The paintwork is not the best, being somewhat flat
overall, but it looks presentable enough and you won't be scared to let it take
its chances in the supermarket car park. Eminently usable as it is,
it could be smartened up over time as desired. Documentation comprises a
partial V5C, MOT until July 2021 and an original owner’s handbook.
