1927 Austin 7 Chummy
Delightful light car in
super condition; purchased by the vendor's father 73 years ago!; fully restored
and ready to go
Purchased by the vendor's father from a scrap yard
in Coventry in 1947, this car has remained in the family ever since - a period
of some 73 years!
It comes with a buff log book which shows the date
of transfer and was used as the family car until laid up in 1954. It was stored
until his father's death in 1979 and the vendor started to
restore the car a year or two later.
A professional engineer
by training, he completely stripped the car to the bare chassis which was
then thoroughly rebuilt. The bodywork was pretty sad and so a new Roach
body was acquired, although he managed to salvage three original wings, the
fourth being fabricated by the vendor along with new running
boards.
Engine fully rebuilt - bored +.020, reground crank, new pistons,
bearings ,valves etc and a new clutch plate fitted.
Two new front seat
frames were made as identical copies of the originals and the interior
was retrimmed in leather. The car was then completely rewired and
a new hood cover fitted. It comes with a full set of side screens. The
wheels were rebuilt, two with new rims and the magneto also, although this
has not yet been fitted - the car running at present on a coil
conversion.
For many, 1927 was the ultimate year for Austin 7
production - the cars offering the delicate, early styling and light
construction yet with slightly bigger brakes and luxuries such as a hinged
bonnet! This car, coming from 73 years of family ownership and a having had
a comprehensive restoration ticks every box possible. If a Chummy isn't on
your shopping list - it should be and if it is, this car would be a very good
one to have in your garage.
