Amazing though it may seem to a modern audience, Vauxhall
was once renowned as the maker of some of the finest cars in the world. Right
through the Edwardian era and into the 1920s, models like the Vauxhall 30/98
were considered to be the equal of any Bentley or Lagonda.
By the
time the 14 was launched in 1933, Vauxhall had been taken over by the American
giant, General Motors. And while the dictates of commercial necessity meant that
standards had to be lowered somewhat, GM were still intent on preserving at
least some of the traditional Vauxhall reputation for
quality.
Furthermore, an injection of Yankee ingenuity meant that the
mass-produced cars embodied a lot more modern technology than their contemporary
British rivals. With good handling, light steering and a strong, semi-unitary
structure, the DX14 was a lively performer for its era, with good acceleration
from its six-cylinder OHV 1781cc engine which was mated to a four-speed ‘silent
third’ gearbox.
First registered in Shropshire in June 1938, this DX 14/6
has spent its whole life in that county and retains its original
(non-transferable) AUJ 42 number plate. On offer here from a deceased estate, it
was bought by our vendor some years ago at which point we are told it was in
running order. As you can see in the photos, it is now looking rather sorry for
itself following a period in storage and is in need of full
restoration. The engine still turns by hand and it comes with an old style V5C
and a buff logbook.
