Description
1971 Morris 1300 Mk III Countryman
Rare
upmarket Estate version of the popular ADO16 model; 68,000 recorded miles; very
smart inside with a few cosmetic jobs on the exterior
The brilliant
Issigonis designed 1100/1300 range was streets ahead of most of the competition,
offering sure-footed front drive handling and masses of internal space.
The Countryman added yet more versatility, with fold down rear seats
offering a load space that would shame most modern SUVs.
This MkIII
Countryman dates from 1971 and combines the later 1,275cc engine with
touches of 'luxury' along the way - the wooden facia linking to the faux wood
trim on the exterior. The seats are very presentable and the whole interior
retains a great deal of originality.
As you can see from the images, the
exterior is at a stage that needs taking in hand, the sills showing rust as
well as the door bottoms, but as yet, a long way from serious.
The
odometer reads 68,000 miles which although unsubstantiated is thought to be
correct and we have had it running and driving, although the clutch hydraulics
have given up the ghost since arrival onsite. An easy fix and indiciative of its
recent time in garage storage.
Rare in the extreme, this iconic piece of
'70s BL design needs some TLC and a general recommissioning before
it provides the reliable, alternative and fun motoring that lurks beneath
the Lime Flower exterior.... We can report however that the vendor has
already fitted a new battery and four new tyres so they can already
be ticked off the list.
