2002 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG (R230)
Smart
Obsidian Black example with panoramic glass roof showing just 56,672 miles
with blown 5.4 V8 developing 493bhp!
Epic performance with a truly thunderous soundtrack - that
good Clarkson bought one himself. The R230 SL55 AMG is powered by a handbuilt
and supercharged 5.4 Litre V8 which pumps out a colossal 493bhp and 700NM of
torque ensuring the pace was ballistic if you wish, but a pussycat around town
with all that torque.
Finished here in desirable Obsidian Black with light grey
leather interior this smart example features the expensive (when new) option of
a panoramic roof and twin spoke, split rim 19inch alloy wheels.
Inside, we find a two-tone cabin with suede instrument
binnacle, heated electric memory seats with optional massage, or Pulse system,
ABC air suspension with adjustable ride height and firmness, automatic/tiptronic
transmission, Comand navigation and in-car entertainment and the usual host of
R230 AMG accoutrements.
Showing just 56,672 miles this rocket ship has been with
our vendor (the 5th owner) for the past few years yet unfortunately
seen little use as part of a collection. The MOT history shows just 1,600 miles
covered since 2013, with it in storage between 2014 – 2018. As a result, the
2nd of the car’s batteries for its ‘electronic consumers’ is low and
needs charging fully either by some regular, extended use or by plugging into a
charger to regain full charge and permit operation of the roof for example and
other internal electrical functions – its quite normal for us to see the message
‘electronic consumers offline’ on an R230 SL that’s seen little use.
Within the history file, we find the V5C, thick owner’
pack full of ‘light reading material’ (!) and service book showing 5 stamps, the
last by Mercedes Benz in March 2010 at 49,379 miles. The current MOT runs until
February 2022 with no advisories recorded following replacement of a front
suspension arm. We also find 6 old MOT certificates and a selection of invoices
including for services by the vendor’s local garage and a purchase invoice from
August 2010 for £27195 with copy advert from Top Marques mag (those were the
days!), VOSA MOT history.
Amongst the invoices, we find a bill for 2 replacement
batteries and oil filter from Mercedes of Bath for £87.18 dated April 2018, a
replacement key, single replacement alloy at an eye-watering £1273 from Mercedes
of Swansea in February 2011.
A road-legal rocket ship crying out for regular use – get
this lockdown out the way then get out and enjoy the near as damnit 500bhp and
thunderous sound-track. We all love an SL55 AMG here, they are awesome
fun.
