1988 Nissan Sunny Coupe
Four owner coupe with
1.6 power showing just 53,700 miles - find another? Rare, quirky and definitely
retro
Amendment - see text
Supplied by AFG
Bristol, this car is one of those sights we no longer see on our roads, thanks
in part to the scrappage scheme. These quirky '80s coupes hold a place in many a
heart along with their kin such as the Mazda RX3, Toyota Corolla coupe, Volvo
340, Honda Civic 2-door/Prelude/Accord coupe, VW Scirocco and others
- all cars we rarely see nowadays.
Powered here by
the bullet-proof and well-proven 84bhp 1.6 petrol four-pot mated to 5-speed
manual transmission and front wheel drive. It has seating for four as well
as a hatchback boot big enough to swallow sufficient luggage for a
vacation or dirty weekend away. With boxy lines it looks 'oh-so'
'80s with its typically Japanese functionality - even down to the big
plastic bumpers and plastic wheel trims.
Equipped here with a manual
tilt sunroof, keep-fit manual windows and sexy, simply retro dash
with original radio cassette, cutting edge digital clock, grippy half vinyl and
cloth well bolstered seats, its aching to be enjoyed, even more so given this
example has covered just 53,713 miles.
The car did run and drive when
delivered and parked in our ample barn, but has since proven reluctant to start,
however it looked to be running on vapours so this is the likely cause. We also
noticed one of the brakes appeared to be binding.
Within the history
file, we find the V5 showing just 5 owners, the current since September
2018 and prior to that it was in long term ownership from 1996 - 2006 and 2006 -
2018. The service book shows nine stamps, the last in March
2020 by Hallen Garage of Bristol. Prior to that, the last stamp was in
October 1994 at 33,637 miles, also in Bristol. There is one invoice on file
which records a cambelt change at the stamped service in March 2020 along with
check and adjustment of the tappets at a cost of £131 - good value for a timing
belt service compared to many we see! The car has no current MOT, the last
expired in June 2008 after being issued in June 2007 at 53,268 miles
with one advisory.
Amendment - The car has
sprung a water leak and leaked coolant on the floor
Not
something we expected to see given their rarity but one we have decided we all
rather like. We've no doubts it will do well and has a very realistic reserve so
get those fingers tapping and bidding to secure a slice of '80s Jap quirky coupe
nirvana and give it the use it deserves!
