As familiar a part of the British streetscape as the red telephone box, the much-loved Ford Cortina was the UK’s best-selling car of the ‘70s. And you can bet that Ian Dury’s ‘Billericay Dickie’ wasn’t alone when he sang the immortal words: “I had a love affair with Nina in the back of my Cortina”, such was the impact this car had on popular culture.
Constantly revised throughout its 20-year life, it received its final MkV facelift in 1979 with a wider grille, flatter roof and even more glass area which proved enough to keep it at the top of the sales chart until 1982 when it was finally replaced by the controversial yet hugely successful Sierra.

This particular 1,593cc estate was first registered in September 1981 and is showing just over 92,800 miles. Little is known about the early history of the car but after changing hands another three times, it was bought by the husband of our vendor. Sadly, after passing away last year, his collection was put up for auction, including a Bentley Mk VI in our last sale.
The Cortina has not been used a lot recently, so the family decided to do a little remedial work to get it running. This means it does now run (albeit rather roughly) and drive but although some work was done to release the seized front and rear brakes, it was not deemed economical to spend more money on it before it was offered for sale. Consequently, it will need some work for it to be used safely on the road.

As can be seen in the photographs, the bodywork is actually not that bad apart from the obligatory surface rust. After all, one would not expect a car like this to be perfect, but this is why it is being offered with no reserve so the highest bidder will purchase it.
