Suitably epic 80's
style palace on wheels; 28ft long and driveable on a car licence; Chevy 454cui
big block power in highly useable order; be the envy of everyone at Caravan
Club or Goodwood!
Dating from January 1984 when everything was
bigger (and better in some ways?) this simply awesome Airstream Excella 270 was
the King of the American road trip dream. Offering comfortable sleeping for 1
or 4 people it is still a hugely commanding vehicle which draws admiring
glances and comments by all who see it.
Powered by a suitably huge Chevy
454cui big block (7.4 litre) petrol V8 with automatic column shift transmission
its got plenty of go and monster torque with a traditional American soundtrack
to boot.
Inside, we find all the comfort, convenience, space and cool
factor you might need with reto wood panelling, comfy burgundy leather sofas
folding into beds, armchair driver and passenger captains chairs with
swivel and electric operation, CB radio and walk in shower with proper toilet
and stylish modern sink in the rear bathroom (bathroom upgraded in 2019 at a
cost of £259)
The spec includes, but is not limited to - power steering
with leather wrapped wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, cup holders,
walnut effect dash trim, front privacy curtains, roof mounted flood light, air
horn, electric start mains generator, 240volt hook up, electric hot water, LPG
powered central heating, LPG tank (82lb) for domestic appliances, 12v pumped
water supply, large fresh (50US gallons) and waste water (50 & 25 US gallon)
tanks, double door fridge/freezer, roof mounted air conditioner, microwave, twin
stainless kitchen sinks with drinking water faucet, 4-burner gas hob with
extractor fan, pair of opening sky lights, systems monitor panel, aero style 12v
lighting throughout, venetian blinds, flush toilet, lots of cupboards and
storage, original fly mesh door, fire extinguisher and more.
Externally, the spec of this 178" wheel base leviathon includes air
operated, automatic side entry step, dead locked side door, side and porch
lights, polished stainless wheel rims, fueselage style aluminium body with
visible rivets and original blue Airstream striping, very good 6meter Zipdee
side canopy awning with toning fabric and awning mat (pictured), rear mounted
spare wheel, slide in tow bar, numerous external lockers, 3 batteries, front and
rear marker lights (original) and immobiliser.
Since import in 2004,
the RV has had just three owners, the current lady since February 2014.
Interesting to note, that something of this size can be driven on a C1 car
license (28 feet long and 6800lb GVWR) if you took your driving license before
1997 we gather.
The engine was treated to an engine tune
up with new plugs, fuel filters, carb rebuild and set up at a cost of
£1,088 by the Anglo American Auto Centre in Newport, South Wales in January
2021 along with a recent spend of £621.48 on new decals and badges in
February 2021 and a further £1,500 spent on 6 new 19.5 inch tyres. In addition,
within the history file we find evidence of other spend on new callipers, brake
pads, exhaust manifolds and other service/improvement work including fridge and
heater service in 2019 and fitment of a Tracker in 2014 along with the old
MOTs and a worthy selection of manuals, instruction books
and other documentation. The Airstream has a current MOT
valid until January 2022 without advisory and is ready to be enjoyed here or
abroad without the limitations of an HGV tag as with many other large
RVs.
Imagine rocking up to a classic/vintage racing weekend at
Goodwood or Silverstone in this, towing your race car or the envious looks by
those on their little pitches at caravan club as this behemoth rolls
in...
A classic motorhome has never looked so appealing.
