Description
1965 Triumph TR4A IRS
Restored over 5 years by
an engineer inc. fitment of useful Overdrive; history back to the 60's; smashing
and usable example
Dating from 1965 the car was treated to a
sympathetic and careful restoration, the aim according to the
detailed rebuild summary on file was to obtain a finish '..that represented
as far as possible, the original sale condition, using as many of the original
parts as possible..while not trying to create a concours car, merely a road car
in the best condition possible'.
The restoration includes, briefly, (but
is not limited to) a complete strip down bar the diff internals, rear hubs and
instruments. The chassis was sand blasted with a new rear section added,
reinforcements to the diff mountings fitted and internally waxoiled. The engine
was rebuilt with original liners, pistons, rings, crankshaft, bearings and oil
pump with the cylinder head modified for unleaded fuel, new vakves and guides
with new timing chain and seals. The clutch was rebuilt to match the new,
rebuilt O/D gearbox modified to TR spec speed ratio by O.R.S. The
steering rack was rebuilt and reshimmed with new boots and joints and a
replacement, original 15" wheel fitted. Up front, new Revington stage 1 springs
were fitted, polybushed with original dampers with the rear recieving the same
treatment.
With respect to bodywork, any repairs required were
completed and repainted with two-pack by Steve Fay of Dingestow
and the underside fully wax-oiled. Inside it was completely
re-trimmed using John Skinner components in black with white piping, the
dashboard stripped and re-polished. The hood and tonneau were new items
from Don Hoods and original frame repaired and maintained. Electrically,
the starter, dynamo and distributor were all reconditioned and the original loom
extensively reworked but retaining the original form with added 12v power
socket. There is an additional folder as part of the history with reams of
invoices for these works and parts including a detailed cost analysis totalling
£15,882 including purchase of the base car for £5,300 - these works being
undertaken between 2007 and 2012.
In addition, we find the V5C and
old buff log book showing it was originally registered GGC 248C, supplied
new in September 1965 to, Mr Micheal of Twickenham, period Triumoh booklets
and literature relating to SAH Triumph tune conversion specialists, 10 old style
MOTs dating back from July 1995 to October 1974 and two further files of
invoices and bills dating back through the 90s to the late 1960s giving the car
useful provenance indeed. More recently, the TR has been treated to two
new calipers, pads and lube service in May 2017 at a cost of £535 and is of
course MOT exempt, last presented (certificate on file) in May 2017 at
91,952 miles when it passed without advisory.
In the boot, we find the
tonneau cover, workshop manual and box containing useful spare parts.
Our
vendor has enjoyed the car since restoration in 2012, the TR4 wearing its 11
years since restoration well with few signs of age and patina since and is ready
for immediate enjoyment as the season opens up again post Covid. TR4A's
are a lot of fun with a very active social and club scene with usable
performance and with the fitment of O/D, enables the rorty 2.2 litre engine to
easily keep up with (and outpace most) modern traffic.
