1990 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 S4

Reserve
Rare to see four-owner, right-hand drive
example in deisrable black with tan interior from 23 year ownership
showing just 133,000km (82,640 miles)
Supplied new in
September 1990 this right-hand drive converted S4 Spider is finished
in Nero (black), sat upon its original 15inch multi-hole alloy wheels with
matching black mohair soft-top and attractive tan half leather and
suede interior with smaller, black leather rimmed Momo steering
wheel.
Under the bonnet, we find the zesty twin-cam 2.0 four-cylinder
engine with Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection giving 124bhp driving the
rear wheels via 5-speed manual transmission. This pretty example comes to us
from 23-year ownership and has featured on YouTube in several
videos sharing the ownership experience and some works
undertaken.
The car has seen limited use over the last 12 months with the
pandemic curtailing many people's driving fun, and as such our vendor has
decided it is time to let someone else enjoy this little sports car.
The history file includes the leather Alfa owner's manual (re-print) and
original service booklet revealing the car was first looked after by well known
Spider LHD to RHD conversion specialists Bell & Colvill Ltd of Horsley,
Surrey with the first stamp in March 1991 by them at 5,336km with a further 8
stamps present, the last by Evans Halshaw of Gloucester in 1996 at
58,535km. The car currently shows 133,003 Km (82,644 miles), the
speedo fascia (only) was changed to MPH to make driving to the UK speed limits
easier in January 2020, with the original fascia being retained, but
the car continues to record in Km.
In addition the file contains the V5C
showing just 4 previous owners (the previous Cheltenham lady owner keeping
it from 1993 to December 1997 when our vendor acquired the car), copy
old V5C, copy old style V5, 17 old MOTs, current MOT valid until
April 2022 with no advisories recorded.
There are invoices for
early main dealer service work, bills for other sundry items and works including
the Kph to Mph speedo fascia conversion, mainfold to downpipe gaskets and new
front and middle exhaust sections at a cost of £162 in April 2020, lube service
kit in October 2017, new clutch kit in July 1999, replacement S4 seat covers in
May 2001, new Mohair hood also in May 2001 costing £340, dyno run in March
1998 recording 122.5bhp at 5,320rpm and 123lb ft of torque by Interpro
Engineering of Bristol and information on the Clifford immobiliser system fitted
to the car.
The file also includes a workshop manual, box of useful spare
parts and correspondence with Fiat UK in May 2003 stating that it was
built in Italy during July 1990 and originally supplied to the Austrian market
before being imported and registered in the UK in September 1990. Fiat
refer to the S4 only being available in LHD form, with the car likely to have
been converted by either Bell & Colvill who serviced the car initially, or
'Seaking' a subsidiary of TKM who held an Alfa Romeo franchise in the UK at that
time.
The car presents well, and is somewhat unusual to see in black,
rather than traditional red or green, with a nice tan interior. The car
looks remarkably original and unmolested save fitment of the smaller steering
wheel (it prevents your knee fouling it and your fingers inadvertently knocking
the stalks, we gather) and sounds super when given a blip on the
throttle. Two sets of keys accompany the car, the immobiliser is
simple to use and it has Bosch fuel injection rather than the potentially
troublesome carbs of the earlier variants. It also has electric
windows, diagnostic port and electric cooling fan - all desirable for more
practical modern motoring.
These S4's really are classics you can
use every day with a good sized boot, tonneau cover, and useful storage area
behind the seats with zingy and sonorous performance from the twin cam four-pot
without the fear of snapped timing belts, being chain-driven.
Offered
here at no reserve, we expect the bidding to be brisk, this model being
much admired and widely tipped for future growth, as highlighted in the
current issue of Classic Cars magazine.
