1967 Triumph Vitesse 2-Litre Convertible

Tidy example in good running order; overdrive gearbox; Mazda MX5 seats; Mota-Lita steering wheel; stainless steel exhaust

Produced between 1966 and 1968, the Herald-based Triumph Vitesse Mk1 was a beefed-up 2-litre version of the Vitesse 6 which had first gone on sale in 1962.
Powered by a smooth 1,596cc six-cylinder engine developed from the Standard Vanguard Six, the Vitesse 6 was lovely to drive but lacked oomph. Its replacement rectified this by upping power to 95bhp thanks to an increase in capacity to 1,998cc, sharing its powerplant with the contemporary Triumph GT6 and 2000 saloon. Mated to an optional overdrive gearbox, it was good for a genuine 100mph and was advertised by Triumph as ‘The Two Seater Beater’.
Particularly easy to maintain thanks to its hinged bonnet/front wing assembly, the Vitesse retained the Herald's amazingly tight turning circle, making it a doddle to manoeuvre and park.
Dating from August 1967, this Vitesse 2-Litre Convertible has the desirable overdrive gearbox and has been in the current ownership since 2013. Looking particularly sporty on wire wheels with a woodrim Mota-Lita steering wheel, it has also been fitted with a stainless steel exhaust, a modern Philips CD/radio and more supportive seats from a Mazda MX5.
Although there is precious little history with the car, six old MOTs show that it has always been in light regular use, clocking up some 7,000 miles since 2005. Although it no longer needs one, it has a current MOT valid until April 2022 with no advisories recorded. An original owner’s handbook is also included.
Starting promptly and running sweetly as we have moved it around on site, it appears to be in generally good order throughout and is ready for some fun top-down motoring over the long hot summer that undoubtedly lies ahead of us.
