1972 MGB Roadster
Rust-free Californian
import; fully rebuilt Ron Hopkinson engine with a Peter Burgess Stage 1 head;
only 8,700 miles since nut-and-bolt rebuild; brand new tyres and fuel
tank; LHD; very nice indeed
As the Heritage Certificate confirms, this MGB Roadster
was built in December 1972 and was a LHD car destined for the North American
market. It came back to the UK from California in 1991 which is when our vendor
acquired it.
Coming from the Sunshine State, it had a totally rust-free
shell and was therefore ideal to be built up into a top class example, as our
vendor intended. He sent the car to MGB specialists Restora Sports of
Burton-upon-Trent who built it up from a bare shell into the fine example you
see today, replacing virtually everything on the car at a cost of £3,900, as
detailed in invoices on file – a not inconsiderable sum 30 years ago.
This included fitting a fully rebuilt Ron Hopkinson engine
which was later improved still further with the fitment of a Peter Burgess Stage
1 gas-flowed cylinder head. The odometer was re-set to zero when the restoration
was completed, nine old MOTs showing that it covered some 8,700 miles between
1991 and 2001 when it was put into storage.
Unearthed in the summer of last year, it was sent to Forge
Garage in Swadlincote for a thorough recommissioning which cost £1,080 and
included a new fuel tank, new front brake calipers, four new tyres and a full
service. It then sailed through its MOT which runs to 30th August
2021 with no advisories recorded.
As you can see in the photos, the car remains in very good
order today apart from a scrape on the driver’s door/front wing. As good
underneath as it is up top, it has been starting promptly and running nicely as
we have moved it around on site with good 60psi oil pressure and a very fruity
exhaust note.
