1954 MG TF
From a deceased estate; very
original car that has been impeccably maintained throughout its life; unleaded
head; stainless steel exhaust; gearbox rebuilt; new mohair hood; driven 50 miles
to the sale; nice transferable number plate
As the
Heritage Certificate confirms, this lovely TF was built in July 1954 finished in
MG Red with a biscuit leather interior and disc wheels. Originally registered in
Hull, the early history of the car has gone astray but picks up again in 1975
when it was owned by a Mr Waterhouse of Yorkshire who kept it until 1989.
It was then acquired by a Mr T Forecast who ran a country
house hotel in Norfolk and was to keep the car right up until 2017. A letter on
file states that the TF was in ‘wonderful, original condition’ when he bought it
in 1989 and that largely holds true today, the car having been lovingly
maintained throughout its life rather than being fully restored.
A good file of invoices show meticulous upkeep during his
28-year ownership, including some localised body repairs and a full repaint
which cost £3,014 in 1998. In 2003 the cylinder head was rebuilt and converted
to unleaded fuel and in 2004 the gearbox was rebuilt with a new dynamo and rev
counter fitted the following year. In 2006 it had a reconditioned radiator and
in 2014 it had a brake overhaul and new rear suspension springs. Electric
windscreen washers have been fitted at some point, along with a stainless steel
exhaust system and the chassis has been regularly waxoiled.
Our vendor acquired the car in 2019 and has continued to
look after it well, as you would expect of a lifelong MG fan who ran his own
classic car garage in Telford for many years. Recent work includes carburettors
rebuilt; new voltage regulator; reconditioned dynamo; full service with new
filters and ignition parts; new fuel pump, battery, wheel cylinders etc. A new
black mohair hood has also been fitted, and the sidescreens and tonneau cover
have been refurbished.
Although it no longer needs one, it has an MOT until May
2022 with just one advisory for a minor oil leak, while 24 old MOTs back to 1989
show that it has always been in light regular use, covering some 17,000 miles in
the last 32 years.
On offer here from a deceased estate, the car was driven
some 50 miles to the sale on one of the hottest days of the year with no
problems whatsoever. Starting promptly and running beautifully as we have moved
it around on site, with good 50psi oil pressure, it retains its original
Hull-issue number plate, RKH 250, which is transferable.
A really genuine TF all round, it wears its 67 years
remarkably well and will no doubt continue to provide sterling service until
long after we are all departed.
