1983 Volkswagen Golf GTi MkI

Recently treated to a full bare-metal restoration; glorious BBS wheels fitted and original interior present; investment opportunity!

We’ve all been there, looking at Ebay, day-dreaming, clicking idly with a notion of intent, trigger finger clicking fervently away then "Ah, erm, bugger" and that sense of impending doom as you realise that last click was a winning - and binding bid...

Well, our intrepid vendor was that man, with a MkI itch that needed scratching, not then knowing what looked like a good usable car would turn out to be a four year bare metal restoration project at significant cost. The result speaks for itself.

Dating from April 1983, this MkI Golf GTi is finished in gleaming black and sits upon a set of good looking BBS X-spoke deep dish alloy wheels that fill the arches nicely, although the original cookie-cutters are included, neatly stacked and wrapped with tyres on a small pallet.

Inside, we find the original interior in good order with just a small area that may require attention at some point on the passenger seat (see image) and obligatory dice hanging from the rear view mirror. Starting well and sounding fruity, the car looks ready to be enjoyed. It was off the road from 2013-2019 during which time it’s been completely restored - little more than 150 miles covered since completion and only 500 since 2015.

Within the ample history file, we find the V5C showing 10 former keepers to our current of 6 years, the current MOT valid until July 2022 with no advisories recorded, 13 old Mots dating back to 1994 at which time the car had covered 91,794 miles (currently showing 151,233 miles) a ream of historic bills for parts and maintenance dating back to the early/mid 90’s and photos of the restorative works undertaken.

Furthermore, the recent restoration is well documented with a host of bills including a whopping £6,932 spent at MKI parts specialists Crazy Quiffs through 2015, £10,979 spent on the actual restoration by Westgate Classics Ltd with a further £700 spent on other sundry parts from an array of suppliers and £1,074 spent on paint strip and rust repair of the shell in 2015 by Enviro-Strip. Thats a total of some £19,685 over the course of four years – quite the late night Ebay gamble!

However, the results are visible here, the car wants for nothing bar an enthusiastic new owner to get out there and enjoy it at club nights, on the back-roads and the very active VDub scene.

On offer at an enticing estimate, we all like this and would all happily have this in our garage.
