1961 Sunbeam Rapier Convertible
Older
restoration; good hood; a range-topping Rapier to use and
improve
First registered KEY 920 in September 1961, this Rapier
Convertible started life in two-tone green according to the accompanying buff
logbook.
Now registered 910 UXD, a thorough restoration
commenced in 1986, although it's owner never got round to finishing the
job. It was sold as a project which was finally completed by the new
custodian sometime in the mid 1990s.
He was to keep the car until 2011,
the Rapier changing hands once again, before entering the vendor's
collection in October last year. We are advised that it has only covered some
5,565 miles since restoration.
Described by the vendor as 'not mint but
very solid' sums it up well. The paintwork, now in Spectrum White and Morroco
Brown is in average condition and the passenger window sits too high which is
interfering with the windscreen pillar, preventing the passenger door from
closing nicely- simple stuff but requiring attention. We are also advised that
the rear brakes need adjustment, the heater needs connecting and clock doesn't
work...you probably get the picture.
The hood is in good order and it
comes with a neat hood cover (missing a stud here and there). It starts, runs
and drives, although it could do with a tune-up, the car sitting comfortably in
the use and improve bracket. It is a rare and desirable model with considerable
potential and richly deserves time spent sorting these few
items.
The file includes a Rapier/Alpine leaflet, two original owners
handbooks and a workshop manual. In addition, the original VIN plate is also in
the file.
With quality Rapier values well into five figures, this rare
rag-top looks good value at the suggested guide price and has the makings of a
good car.
