1925 Rugby Durant Tourer, Model F
An unusual
American tourer; RHD; UK registered in 2007
The
Durant Motor Company was founded back in 1921 and was specifically associated
with the Star brand in the USA. Like many American manufacturers, they re-named
certain models that were destined for foreign lands. Vehicles being exported to
the UK were badged as this one is, ‘The Rugby Durant.’
Back
in the day, these cars were bravely trying to compete with the Model T Ford and
the Chevrolet, but it was an uphill struggle and it seems that in 1925, their
best year, Durant/Star/Rugby Models managed to sell over 120,000 units
- the Model F’s making up about 70,000 of these.
This
particular Model F tourer appears to have been first registered in the UK in
2007 and we understand has spent some time in France. Being a RHD model, it has
probably come from Australia or New Zealand where they were popular due to their
low price and sturdy construction.
Powered
by a 2-litre unit under the bonnet and sitting on its smart wooden artillery
wheels, this tourer is a rare sight on UK roads. Plenty of space inside though
for jolly jaunts for the whole family. Indeed, our vendor, although he has not
owned it long, has been doing just that around the lanes near his French
home.
