Description
1952 MG TD
With a comprehensive restoration
in 2003 this TD is ready to be enjoyed
The new MG
TD combined the TC's drivetrain, a modified hypoid-geared rear axle, the MG
Y-Type chassis, a familiar T-Type style body and independent suspension using
coil springs from the MG Y-Type saloon. Also new were rack and pinion steering,
smaller 15 inch disc type road wheels and standard equipment bumpers with
over-riders. The car was also five inches wider with a track of 50 inches.
Nearly 30,000 MG TDs were manufactured. When the series ended in 1953, all but
1,656 were exported with 23,488 of them to the United States. An example tested
by 'The Motor' magazine in 1952 had a top speed of 77mph and could accelerate
from 0-60 mph in 18.2 seconds.
This TD was purchased by the vendors stepfather, a local
garage owner, in 1983 for £5000 (with sales receipt). As well as being used
every summer for trips to Aberystwyth, the TD was also the means of transport
for the vendor’s parents’ wedding and honeymoon in April 1986, an extremely cold
and wet trip to Belgium! In 2003 the car had a substantial restoration to a very
high standard which included replacement of the wooden tub (photos of
restoration available). Subsequently it has only been used occasionally in the
summer months.
Now in lovely order, it was driven to us for the sale and
is as nice an example as we have seen. Completed to standard spec, it retains
its original gearbox (so many have modern five-speeds fitted) and its full
complement of instruments function as they should.
