1987 Porsche 944 Turbo
In daily use; recent
new cam belt, tyres, brake pads, PAS pipes etc; scope for cosmetic
improvement
Introduced in 1985, the Porsche 944 Turbo used a
turbocharged and intercooled version of the standard 944 2.5-litre in-line 4
that increased performance to 220bhp and 243lb/ft torque. Together with a host
of other revisions, such as improved aerodynamics, a strengthened gearbox, wider
wheels and uprated suspension, the new car was capable of 155mph and could
sprint to 60 in just 5.9 seconds.
Blessed with superb handling thanks to
its perfect 50:50 weight distribution, the car was every bit as fast as the
contemporary 911 3.2 and even more expensive at £36,800! All the more surprising
then, that they are so humbly valued today compared to their iconic air-cooled
cousins.
Supplied new by Dick Lovett of Swindon in August 1987, this 944
Turbo has had five owners from new, the third keeping it for 10 years (1995 –
2005) and the fourth for 15 years (2005 – 2020) although it appears that
the latter didn’t actually use it as it was never MOTd during his
ownership.
Now showing 167,385 miles on the clock, it has clearly been
well-looked-after in the past with 16 service stamps in the book, the last at
140,998 miles in November 2004, all by official Porsche centres with various
supporting invoices.
Our vendor acquired the car 18 months ago and set
about a thorough recommissioning which entailed various new parts including:
timing belt, balance belt, tensioners and idlers; engine front oil seals; clutch
master and slave cylinders; brake pipes and pads; power steering pipes; fuel
pump and fuel tank sender; engine oil and filter. He also had the wheels
refurbished and four new tyres fitted.
Used daily during the current
ownership, it is said to have proved very reliable and was driven some 50 miles
to the sale. It has certainly been starting promptly and running well as we have
moved it around on site. As you can see in the photos, the bodywork is in need
of attention here and there (primarily sills and tailgate) and it seems that the
odometer is stuck as the mileage on the last two MOTs is the same, the current
ticket running until September 2022 with just one advisory for a cracked
windscreen.
Supplied with all its original handbooks in the original
Porsche wallet, this 944 Turbo is eminently usable as it is and could be
improved over time as desired.
