1974 Reliant Scimitar GTE
Manual with O/D,
Wolfrace wheels; substantial mechanical rebuild since 2018
The SE5a GTE Reliant Scimitar sported the 3.0-litre Ford
Essex engine with a top speed of some 120mph, either with a Borg-Warner
automatic transmission or four-speed manual box with overdrive.
Improvements over the preceding model included an extra 7hp and more revs,
meaning the GTE was now capable of 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. Some 5,000 5a models
were manufactured - more than any other Scimitar.
VAN 867M was first registered in April 1974 and purchased
by the current vendor in June 2018 as an unfinished project. The body had been
painted and the chassis was in excellent condition. Mechanically the car had
been taken apart and left in boxes. The engine was stripped and rebuilt with new
piston rings and shell bearings, an alloy timing gear was fitted and a new oil
pump drive, both potentially weak items on the V6 engine. New parts included;
brake master cylinder and wheel cylinders, clutch master cylinder and slave
cylinder, electric fan and thermo setting switch, alloy timing gear, servo,
front suspension bushes, battery, blade fuse box, brake hoses, heater matrix,
front windscreen and rubber, 4 headlamps and bowls, carpets, bullet mirrors,
sunroof (imported from USA), Firestone tyres x 5. The carburettor is also almost
new.
The only things that the vendor is aware of not working
are the rear heated screen and the rear wash/wiper.
It appears that the car was originally an auto model and
converted to 4 speed manual with overdrive at some point before the current
vendor purchase the car.
