Their brochure described their impressive 136" stretch wheelbase ‘Portway’ thus…. ‘Designed as a luxury vehicle for up to twelve persons, the Glenfrome Portway 6-door Range Rover is the largest of the range of Glenfrome four-wheel drive automobiles and features all of those characteristics which have made Glenfrome of England a watchword in the world of ultra-luxury transport. No expense is spared to ensure that each Portway that leaves the workshops is a superb example of the automobile builders art. The most skilled craftsmen use only the very best materials ranging from Canadian Burr Walnut to rich Conolly hide leather to enable Glenfrome to offer you a vehicle of outstanding quality and individualism to enhance your lifestyle. A range of options is available for the Portway and many features can be tailored to your precise requirement.’ Questionable grammar aside, they were successful and found customers across the globe, particularly in the oil-rich Middle Eastern States where neither money nor appetite for petrol was the remotest issue. Adding over £9,000 to the cost of a standard run-of-the-mill Range Rover, they screamed opulence and if you are into your Classic Range Rovers, make an essential addition to your collection. This 1983 example was first registered in the name of Sheik Ahmed Bin Al-Khalili, the Grand Mufti to the Sultanate of Oman – effectively the chief religious advisor in the country. It arrived in the UK in 1998 onboard the Al Ihsa’A, although it had been UK registered several years before so it may have travelled to and fro - who knows? It passed to its current listed keeper in November 1999, with several bills from Deepcut Garage in Surrey listing repairs and maintenance, the odometer showing some 41,000 kms just before it changed hands. Little is known of its subsequent history, an old MOT on file dating from that time suggesting it has done very little since. It hasn't driven for about 10 years, although it was started about four years ago and the engine is free. The vendor knows no reason why it wouldn't start given a fresh battery and fuel. The car will need some R&R (restoration and recommissioning) but is all there and clean and tidy under the bonnet. A BMIHT Heritage Certificate lists it as a LHD Export model in Vogue blue, leaving the works on 3rd August 1983 destined for Oman. For those with a growing family, what fun this would be….
