Description
1960 MGA 1600 Roadster
A very usable car; just
1,000 miles on rebuilt engine and gearbox; driven to us; good hood and weather
equipment
This most usable of MGAs comes to us with loads of
history, with bills and invoices dating back to the start of the '70s. The V5C
shows five previous owners, the vendor acquiring the car in 2012.
One of
the principal invoices dates from 1997, when Gerry Revens of MG Restorations
undertook a comprehensive renovation. Parts used included both door pillar
assemblies, a left hand front wing, valence, boot lid, repair sections and a
good used rear n/s wing.
The car was painted Charriot red and numerous
small parts changed - photos on file showing the extend of the work done and the
completed job which looked very smart.
Since purchase in 2012, the vendor
has further improved the car, aiming to make it fun and reliable for
Continental Touring. A new screen and restoration to the windscreen frame took
place that year and the car was used and enjoyed until it was deemed
time to give the mechanics an overhaul. A recon radiator was also fitted in 2012
and new front calipers added within the last four years, although there are no
invoices for these last two items.
The engine and box were removed
in 2016, and a reconditioned unit supplied by Moto-Build Ltd acquired
and fitted. This included a new clutch kit, lightened flywheel and a fully
balanced bottom-end.
In addition, a reconditioned exchange
gearbox was also fitted, supplied by Hardy Engineering Transmissions
who had fitted new bearings, gears and synchros.
The end result
was a success, the owner enjoying reliable overseas travel in style,
the only blot on its copybook being the paintwork,
which exhibits microblistering..
The car is however robust, with a
well restored body, decent interior and recently reconditioned engine
and gearbox (which have only covered around 1,000 miles). It comes with
weather equipment and was driven some 40 miles to the sale.
The guide
price reflects the condition of the paintwork, which is presentable but
could be further improved. If you are looking for a car with very sound
bodywork and recently reconditioned mechanics - this is the car for
you.
