Description
1965 Land Rover Series IIA
Older restoration
in absolutely cracking order; ex-military with correct straight rear cross
member and re-galvanised front and rear bumperettes; fully working overdrive
fitted
This Land Rover was originally part of 17
Vehicle Company in Germany back in the late 1960s, waiting/anticipating conflict
from the East and also likely to be standing ready for use by UK special forces
at the time. Fortunately, it appears to have never been used in anger and was
transferred to various depots in Belgium and Holland before returning to the UK
in 1975 where it became part of military transport motor pools in northern
England and Scotland.
We imagine the landy was
not used a great deal during this time as it was originally left hand drive,
which would explain the relatively low mileage of 41,000 showing now. Released
to civilian life in 1980 and registered at the time as WPH 698V it passed
through a number of owners before resting with our vendor, a military vehicle
enthusiast.
It is not known exactly when it was
changed from left to right hand drive, but those of you familiar with these
vehicles, this is not a big job and is surely an improvement now the car is
based in the UK. It is also now registered with a correct age related
number of PWT 101C.
Since this time it has
covered fewer than 2,000 miles and presents very well, the chassis
completely solid, as is the bulkhead after a restoration some time
ago.
Showing with a brand new soft top with
windows, it has the rare and fully working overdrive, free wheeling hubs,
original starting handle, new seat belt bar with inertia belts and underneath
the correct military straight rear cross member. As mentioned, at the time of
the restoration, the front and rear bumpers were galvanised and still look
fresh.
The 2.25 petrol engine seems to start
and run sweetly with good oil pressure. The correct ‘banjo’ steering wheel is
fitted along with the correct Smiths heater with wait for it – a working fan!
Recently fitted with new parabolic springs and
Monroe shocks all round – it is a delight to drive and apart from a few age
related marks (as expected) it could easily be driven
everyday, or used on the show circuit - but definitely one
to be enjoyed.
