Description
1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SE (W140)
Super,
earlier three-owner W140; thumping 5.0-V8; from long term ownership; just
76,937 miles; considerable recent spend inc. new wiring harness, steering pump
rebuild and new brakes all round
Supplied
new by Gerard Mann Mercedes of Coventry in December 1991, this earlier W140
series Mercedes S-Class hails from the pre-facelift era, before the corporate
model nomenclature change in 1994 and is badged 500 SE (later becoming the S500)
and is a standard wheel base example.
Finished
in Smoke Silver/Grey the car still looks imposing, yet wonderfully Germanic and
business like at the same time.
When new, it was incredible, a few years later it looked a
bit lardy and dated, yet now, has come back into fashion with values for
these W140s on the rise as the market realises what an astoundingly
well-built generation of motor car they were.
This super example has been with our caring vendor for the last 11
years and has had just two former keepers and shows just 76,937 miles which is
uncommonly low for one of these mile munchers. Under the bonnet, we find the 322bhp M119
series 5.0-litre V8 engine which makes 480NM of torque, enough to give the big
Merc a zero to sixty mph time of just 7.0 seconds and a limited top speed of
155mph with considerable mid range grunt with power being sent to the rear
wheels via four-speed automatic transmission with Sport and Economy
modes.
Inside the cabin, we find the typically
plush, comfortable and luxurious spec with acres of soft beige leather, walnut
trim, electric windows, electric mirrors including rear view mirror, snow chain
button, digital climate control with AC, heated rear window, rear blind,
sunroof, electric rear head rests, electric front seats with driver memory,
cruise control, multi speaker sound system with Becker head unit, parking
sensors and remote central locking.
The history
file for this smart example includes the V5C recording two former keepers as
mentioned, the owner’s pack and service book with 15 stamps including PDI, the
last in December 2019 at 76,883 miles by GB Motorservices of Ross on Wye. In
addition, we find the original PDI check sheet, first aid instructions and a
file of invoices for parts and maintenance plus copy original log book and 15
old MOTs. The current MOT is valid until
February 2023 and recorded three minor advisories (enter the reg online at
check-mot.service.gov.uk).
We also note
a purchase invoice from MB specialist The SL Shop to our vendor in 2011 at which
time the car had covered 71,000 miles with 12 month warranty showing the car to
have covered just under 6,000 miles in his 11 year tenure. The most recent invoices for works
undertaken are dated February 2022 and totalled some £2,487 and included a new
alternator, new battery, rebuilt power steering pump with new seals, new main
top of engine/injection engine wiring harness, spark plugs and fuel filter
renewal at 76,888 miles. The other, is dated March of this year for another
£1,054 and includes fitment of new brake discs and pads all round with new rear
callipers, new brake fluid and replacement hand brake release
handle.
A corking example of the earlier
500SE with sensible miles and from caring ownership, its one to watch,
enjoy and invest in. They don’t make them like this
anymore.
