Description
1974 Triumph Stag Auto
Only 4,000 miles
on rebuilt engine; many invoices for new parts in recent years; runs sweetly
This bright
red Stag was first registered to a doctor in London on 1st January 1974 and
spent some years in the big city before heading for rural Herefordshire in 2013
via Essex and the Home Counties. A previous owner had already researched its
history, which includes multiple owners over the years, with most of their
details recorded in the history file.
Bills on file indicate major work
in 1998/99 at c.90,400 miles. This included a new hood, seat covers, wiring
loom, radiator and rebuilt carbs. The brakes, steering and suspension were
overhauled in September 1999 with new discs, pads, braided hoses, power steering
rack, track rod ends, Spax shock absorbers etc. Lumenition electronic ignition
was also fitted at some point.
In December
2005 at c.101,000 miles, James Paddock Ltd supplied a new set of pistons, big
end bearings, timing chains and sprockets etc, confirming a major engine
overhaul took place, supported by photos of the engine being rebuilt. Since
then, the car has covered barely 4,000 miles, the odometer currently showing
5,717 miles.
It was last MOT'd in 2014, the car getting some light
exercise before being put away in the garage for another few years. Shortly
before the auction it was treated to fresh oil and filter and has been starting
easily and running very sweetly as we have moved it around on site, with that
characteristic V8 burble from the stainless steel tail pipes.
The paintwork looks to have been refreshed at
some point in the not-too-distant past and still looks very presentable. The
seat covers and dash vents have some signs of paint mist from the respray and
could do with a good clean.
Overall it looks
like a solid car with many new parts and a recent engine rebuild that is now
crying out for more regular use and could be smartened up over time as
desired.
