1996 Mercedes-Benz SL320 (R129)

Attractive, mid-point R129 with 3.2 straight-six, rear seats and AMG split rim style alloy wheels; serviced Jan-22 with MOT until June-23

Dating from February 1996, this mid-point face-lift example is finished in desirable Tourmaline green and sits upon a set of attractive AMG style deep dish split rim alloy wheels with wider rear tyres which set the car off well, filling the arches giving it a meaner, sportier look and wears its original factory removable hard-top.

Under the bonnet, we find the M104 series 3.2-litre 24-valve DOHC straight-six petrol engine which develops 228bhp at 5,500 rpm driving the rear wheels via five-speed automatic transmission.

Inside the typically cosy cabin we find soft beige leather interior, walnut dash trim, electric windows, electrically adjustable steering column, climate control, heated rear screen (for the hard top), electric windows, electric mirrors, cruise control, electric roll over bar, electric soft-top and rear seats (optional). 

At the time of photographing, we were unable to remove the hard-top, the button was flashing, and we could hear pump noises but the roof seemed reluctant to release so we were unable to ascertain the condition of the soft-top or its functionality.  We also noted wear and temporary repair to the driver’s seat bolster as pictured and sagging to the hard-top headlining.

The car shows 116,903 miles and largely presents well externally with satin finish to the lower plastic sections and bumpers as was common at the time along with fitment of smoked rear lamp lenses.

The history file includes the V5C revealing five former keepers to the current of 10 years, the owner’s pack with two booklets, a selection of bills including replacement NSF ball joint in June-20, new Yuasa battery in March-21, rear shocks in Dec-20, OSF wheel bearing in August-20, full service in May-21 at 112,560 miles by VYV Ltd of Gwent and another by the same garage more recently in January-22 at 115,967 miles.

In addition, we find one old MOT, VOSA MOT history print-out and current MOT valid until July -23 recording two minor advisories.

Attend to the roof and you could have yourself an attractive R129 series SL with the thinking man’s choice of engine for little outlay.
