Description
1990 Bentley Mulsanne S
Only 42,700 miles from
new with 17 service stamps; new Bridgestone tyres all round; a most impressive
looking Bentley in a lovely colour scheme
Launched in
1980, the Mulsanne was effectively a Bentley version of the new Rolls-Royce
Silver Spirit and was virtually identical apart from a different radiator
treatment and a more sporting interior.
In 1982
a Turbo version joined the range with 50% more power, sports suspension, sports
seats, a revised centre console and alloy wheels. This was followed in 1987 by
the Mulsanne S, which shared all the sporting features of the Turbo model and,
from 1989, gained quad round headlamps instead of twin rectangular ones but
retained a normally aspirated version of the familiar 6,750cc V8 engine, now
fitted with Bosch Jetronic fuel injection.
With
taut handling and gliding to 60mph in 10 seconds, it was plenty quick enough for
most owners and is also pretty rare - just 909 Mulsanne S models were
produced (plus another 61 in stretched LWB form) before it was replaced by the
very similar Brooklands in 1992.
First
registered in August 1990, this Mulsanne S has covered only 42,734 miles from
new and comes with a good service history comprising 17 stamps in the book, the
first 14 by Rolls-Royce main agents Mead of Burnham and the last by Balmoral of
Bromsgrove at 25,498 miles in May 2007 which included new hydraulic brake
accumulator spheres and waxoyle treatment to the underside and the wheel arches.
We are told that it has been serviced since
then, including a hydraulic service and four new Bridgestone tyres immediately
before the auction, but there are no invoices to support this. It has an MOT
until March 2023 with no advisories recorded and an online check shows that it
has very rarely had any advisories throughout its life apart from minor issues
with the parking brake.
An invoice shows that
the previous owner bought the car from Balmoral in 2007 and the V5C implies that
he kept it until May this year, being the same person but at a different
address. According to Experian the car had 3 owners prior to 2007 so it seems
likely that, due to changes of address, it has had 5 owners to date rather than
the 7 former keepers recorded on the V5C.
It
certainly looks like a cossetted example with gleaming Midnight Blue
paintwork and a lovely Silverstone hide interior. Driven over 100
miles to the sale on one of the hottest days on record, it has been starting
instantly and running sweetly as we have moved it around on site.
A gorgeous looking Bentley in all respects, it
retains its original handbooks and look mighty tempting at the modest guide
price suggested.
