1935 Crossley Regis Tourer
Believed to be one
of only two Tourers surviving; engine and pre-selector gearbox recently rebuilt;
starts instantly and runs very sweetly; driven 50 miles to the sale; large
history file; find another!
Extremely rare car, believed
to be one of only two Tourers surviving from no more than 25 made between 1935
and 1937. Coventry Climax four-cylinder 1,122cc engine producing 34bhp (RAC
rating 10hp) and good for a top speed of 65mph. ENV Type 74 4-speed pre-selector
gearbox.
First registered in
Manchester in March 1935 with the registration number BNC 810, this Crossley
Regis Tourer then reputedly had one owner until 1966 when it was acquired
by a Mr Ed Gooch of Lincs. He took it to South Africa in 1972, keeping it
until c.1983 when it was bought by a Mr Stan Whittles of Johannesburg.
In 1989 it appeared at a Coys auction in UK and then moved to
Jersey where it was owned by a Mr Brian Surcouf for the next 20 years. He used
the car regularly and looked after it well, as evidenced by many invoices on
file. In 2010 it was offered for sale by Le Riche Automobile Restorers of Jersey
for £29,950 which is when our vendor acquired it.
Brought back to
England and registered as USU 625, it has been well-maintained in the current
11-year ownership. This includes: engine rebuilt by Bradbury Engineering of
Market Drayton with new pistons, liners etc. plus conversion to run on unleaded
fuel (£2,940). ENV gearbox rebuilt by Graham Whitehouse of Halesowen (£3,355).
Other work in the current ownership includes: new road springs and
shock absorbers all round; new kingpins; rebuilt carburettor; five new tyres and
inner tubes; new battery.
A full set of weather gear
is present (hood, hood cover, sidescreens, full tonneau cover) all in good
condition, along with an indoor car cover.
Affectionately
known as Albert, the car has only covered around 1,000 miles since the engine
rebuild and was driven 50 miles to the sale. It has been starting instantly and
running very sweetly as we have moved it around on site, with good 50psi oil
pressure.
A most attractive car all
round and well-known to the Crossley Register, Albert comes with a large
and interesting history file and is on offer here at a very attractive guide
price.
