Description
1935 Lagonda Rapier Abbott Tourer
Rare and
desirable example with pre-selector gearbox from long term enthusiast ownership;
restored over six years from 2008-2014 at a cost of over
£40,000
The Lagonda Rapier was manufactured by
the British Lagonda company between 1934 and 1936 with nearly 400 examples being
produced during the period of production.
Designed to be a fast tourer, central to the design of the car was
Thomas “Tim” Ashcroft’s newly designed, twin-overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder
engine. This was able to produce 50 bhp, a huge power output for an engine of
its size, resulting in a top speed of 75mph. Alongside this the vehicle utilised
a sturdy steel chassis, which allowed it to fully live up to its “tourer”
design.
This August 1935 Abbot Tourer bodied
example underwent a restoration by Bristol Classic & Sportscars Ltd of
Clevedon over a period of c. six years between 2008-2014 including body off and
engine rebuild at a cost of over £35,000 spread over a series of invoices. In
addition, there are further bills for a re-trim including new hood, side screens
and tonneau fitted by which cost £5,886 and further £1,556 for the manufacture
of a new hoodframe to the original pattern.
The
file also includes some colour print out images of some of the restoration works
as well as other photos of the hood frame plus some correspondence from the mid
70’s relating to another restoration of the car by Wrangaton Motors of Devon.
Another note on file references a replacement gearbox in
c.1987.
Another of the several files included
with this Lot includes technical data, DVLA re-registration information with
reference to application for its original registration number, Instruction
booklet for operation, further technical literature, some spare parts, Lagonda
Heritage book, DVD on Lagonda, couple of old MOTs and the V5C showing our vendor
has owned the car since 2015.
The V5C suggests
the car has only had one owner since 1935 - “ No. of former keepers 1 since
1935”.
Our vendor is now in
his late 80s and after 40 years of owning Lagondas and Lagonda Rapiers he has
decided its finally time, with regret and absolute fondness to hang up these
specific driving gloves for good.
On offer at a
very appealing estimate, this pretty pre-select example looks super and must be
a joy to own and drive – just remember the throttle is the middle pedal
here!
