Description
1986 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W107)
Only 42,800
miles from new with an excellent service history; detailed and highly
favourable 27-page engineer's report included; a gorgeous example of this
blue chip classic
Widely regarded as the pick
of the 107 Series range, the 300SL came out in 1985 and had a creamy smooth 3.0
straight-six producing 188bhp and 191lb/ft which made it good for 0-60 in 9.6
seconds with a top speed of 130mph. Almost as quick as the larger V8 models, it
was not only more economical but also handled better thanks to improved weight
distribution.
First registered in November
1986, this gorgeous 300SL is finished in Surf Blue with Alpaca Gray leather
seats. It has covered only 42,877 miles to date in the hands of nine
owners, our vendor buying it from Kenny Dunn Motors of Edinburgh
in February 2017.
Before he acquired the car,
our vendor had it inspected by Elite Inspections who produced a detailed and
highly favourable 27-page engineer’s report in November 2016 when the car had
covered 41,507 miles. This included camera bore scope inspection of the
bulkhead/scuttle panel which found no signs of damage or corrosion. This report
can be viewed in the history file and can be emailed to potential bidders on
request.
The report also contained a
summary of the service history which recorded 16 stamps in the book up to 41,309
miles in March 2016 but sadly the actual service book has since gone missing.
However, there are over 70 invoices on file which chart meticulous upkeep from
new (much of it at M-B main agents), including invoices for at least another two
services since March 2016 and another for professional waxoil treatment to the
underside in January 2017. It was last serviced by Mercedes specialist Gerry
Doverman of Hereford in June 2020 and has done just over 200 miles
since.
The history file also
contains the original data card for the car, an owner’s handbook, a guide to the
Alpine radio/CD, a period sales brochure and no fewer than 23 old MOTs to
warrant the mileage. The current MOT runs to April 2023 with just one advisory
for a minor oil leak. A stand for the hard top is also included, along with a
clever mechanism which makes removing the hard top from the car a one-man
rather than two-man job. The canvas soft top is also present and in excellent
condition. There is also a wind deflector and an indoor car
cover.
Always kept in a heated
garage in the current six-year ownership and used in fine weather only, the car
looks absolutely wonderful and has been starting promptly and running
beautifully as we have moved it around on site.
Good, low-mileage
300SLs are getting thin on the ground these days and it could be a long time
before you see another as nice as this.
