1966 Triumph TR4A
Wow! What a stunner; fully
restored with various choice upgrades; overdrive; Surrey top and soft
top; very eye-catching indeed!
When did you
last see a TR4 that looked as good as this? First registered in London in
September 1966, it was originally yellow and has lots of early history to show
upkeep over the years, including a full restoration in the mid-1980s by a
previous owner.
From 2008 – 2019 it was owned
by a titled gentleman in West Sussex who treated it to a second restoration that
took several years to complete and reputedly cost some £30,000. Although there
are only a few invoices to show exactly what was done, the car speaks for itself
– it looks absolutely stunning.
The interior
was professionally retrimmed in perforated cream Connolly leather at a cost of
over £5,200 – even the door cards, the boot lining, the hard top roof lining and
the dash top are leather. Another invoice shows that the overdrive gearbox was
reconditioned and a new clutch kit fitted. Clearly it has had much other work
and the underbonnet appearance suggests a few upgrades – TriumphTune rocker
cover and Revotec fan for starters.
Finished
in Rover Nightfire Red metallic, it rides on sparkling chrome wire wheels shod
with BF Goodrich whitewall tyres while a Monza fuel filler adds to the sporting
look. Luxury features continue inside with a MotaLita steering wheel, walnut
dash and door cappings, cream coloured dials, a classic-style modern CD/radio
with USB connectivity, additional cigar lighter port under the dash plus various
other switches of uncertain function.
There is
even a slide-out picnic table incorporated into the boot, although this means
the spare wheel will not fit in the storage space underneath so a
can of puncture repair is carried instead. The picnic table is easily removed so
the spare wheel (which is included) can be carried if preferred. A soft top for
the Surrey top is included, as is an aluminium hard top, although the latter has
never been properly fitted – the fixings/rubbers are included but we just rested
it in place for the photos.
The speedometer stopped working in June
this year so a new cable was fitted which fixed the speedo but seems to
have disabled the odometer, the vendor telling us that the car has only
covered around 150 miles since. He also advises that the horn is operated from a
toggle switch to the left of the steering column and that the underside of
the car was Dinitrol treated earlier this year.
Since the restoration was completed the car has only covered around
2,200 miles and it was last serviced just a few hundred miles ago. We are told
that it drives as well as it looks and it has certainly been starting promptly
and running well as we have moved it around on site, with good 45psi oil
pressure and a very fruity exhaust note. Although it no longer needs one, it has
an MOT until December 2022 with no advisories recorded.
The most eye-catching TR4A we have ever seen, it will draw crowds
of admirers wherever it goes.
