1949 Land Rover Series I 80inch
From 40 year
ownership; ring-pull model; straight and original; running and driving; just how
they should be
We get a lot of Land Rovers through Brightwells,
possibly our location helps, but few are as early or nicely original as this
one.
Purchased by the vendor back in 1991, it was first registered on
16th September 1949, just a few weeks after Land Rover changed from light green
to Bronze green....
Its chassis number R06101266 shows it to be the
1,266th RHD built - a UK home order. It is very much as delivered, bar a
two-litre engine (eroniously recorded as 2,286cc in the logbook) which is
thought to have been fitted in the early '50s, although there is no supporting
evidence to suggest when it was done.
We are advised that it had a recon
steering box, although this will have been many years ago and retains many early
Series I attributes such as narrow road springs, date-stamped radiator 9/49,
Butler headlights through the grille, 10 hole draw bar, 20amp Lucas ammeter
(first models only) and even the sheathing on the tailgate chains. It retains
its original jack and handle, starting handle, heater and
wheelbrace.
Also on the inside are spade seats and dip switch on the
column, while the fish plates on the bumpers are correct - it even retains the
brass chassis plate under the bonnet.
The front axle number is 06101743,
Gearbox 0610r238 while is slightly later engine is number 36101852. The
registration number is still registered on the DVLA database and it comes with
an old style V5, so the new owner will need to apply for a replacement in the
normal way.
Running and driving around onsite, this is pure investment
grade material and is one of the most appealing early Land Rovers we have
offered.
