Lots of history from new; recent £6,300 spend on repairs and upgrades;
ready for new adventures
Renault’s
answer to the Citroen 2CV, the flimsy and frugal 4 was in production for 30
years (1961 – 1992). But considering that they made over 8 million of them, it’s
amazing how rarely you see one on the road these days. It seems that there are
fewer than 600 left in the UK, only half of which are taxed.
Sold new by Simpkins Garage of Eastleigh in
August 1983, this top-of-the-range GTL (boasting a 34bhp 1,108cc engine and
front disc brakes) had one lady owner for its first 12 years who clearly looked
after it well. The service booklet has no fewer than 16 stamps up to 75,500
miles in 1995 with many invoices for additional work including conversion to run
on unleaded fuel in 1989; new front wings and a general tidy up in 1993; repairs
to the floor pan in 1995.
Subsequent invoices
show many new parts over the following years while 17 old MOTs indicate that the
current mileage of 121,558 is correct and that the car was off the road from
2006 - 2013.
The current (sixth) owner bought
the car from Pioneer Automobiles in June 2018 for £4,500. In 2021 he spent
£2,645 on improvements which included a reconditioned axle; new brake pipes and
wheel bearings and repairs to the floors/sills/inner wings etc. In 2022 he spent
another £3,699 which included various repairs to address MOT failure points;
brake overhaul; an all new electronic ignition system; full service; rolling
road tune up etc. It now has an MOT until June 2023 with just one advisory
for a minor oil leak.
Running well as we
have moved it around on site, with that marvellous marshmallow ride, this Gallic
charmer now needs a new guardian who can reap the benefits of all the money so
recently lavished upon it.
