Exceedingly rare to see
in the UK; Portuguese import in lovely order; starts runs and drives; charming
example with 1267cc Boxer engine
Dating (we
believe) from 1970, this unusual little fellow is a Subaru FF-1 1300G, launched
in July 1970 and in production until the demise of the FF model (which first
came out in 1966) in 1973.
A front-wheel drive
model, powered by a 1267cc EA62 OHV flat-four Boxer engine which developed 80bhp
when new with manual transmission.
The car featured unusual inboard front brakes and independent torsion bar
suspension as well as two radiators – one for starting (also the heater core) to
hasten warm-up and the second for normal running – in fact, Subaru boasted of
the cars poor-weather usability as a result of this unusual design
feature.
A left-hand drive example, our vendor
bought it in 2020 off his chum who had imported it from Portugal where he partly
resided, enjoying the quirky design and simplicity of it.
In what looks to be super condition, the dry climate of Portugal
clearly aiding the car’s passage through time keeping it in good
order.
Imported and registered here in November
2018 the V5C looks to have incorrectly recorded the car as a 1976 – the model
ceased production in 1972, so this might require rectifying. In addition to the
V5C we find a bill for a workshop repair manual and the manuals
themselves.
Starting promptly, this little
Japanese gem had us all excited for reasons we probably wouldn’t admit to our
wives but its quirky charms certainly have us all smitten.
Believed to be the only one in the UK unless you can tell us
otherwise, it looks most appealing and looks to be in super order – stand out,
dare to be different? You're
certainly unlikely to see another one any time soon.
