Description
Current owner 30+ years; restored some years ago and still very
presentable today
The Morris Ten
was introduced in 1933 as the company's offering in the important 10hp sector of
the British market. It continued through a series of variants until 1948 when it
was replaced by the MO Series Morris Oxford.
Launched in 1938, the Series M was completely new compared to its
predecessors with unitary construction and a 37bhp 1,140cc OHV engine
(also fitted to the MG TC sports car). Driving through a four-speed gearbox, it
gave the car a top speed of 62mph.
The underpinnings were conventional for the time with
solid axles front and rear with leaf spring suspension all round. A steel
sunroof was a popular post-war option that helped to keep sales bouyant. Only
saloon bodies were made for the civilian market, but a range of pick-up bodies
were fitted during the war as one of many similar vehicles by British
manufactures collectively known as ‘Tillies’.
First registered in Surrey
as KPH 815 in September 1946, nothing is known about the early history of
this car but our vendor’s father (now deceased) acquired it way back in the
1980s as a restoration project. Owner of a local garage, he then spent many
years slowly bringing it up to the condition you see today, as shown in
half-a-dozen photos on file.
One old MOT implies that it
was back on the road by 2005, a check of the MOT history online showing that it
was in use from 2005 – 2007, covering around 450 miles. Since then it has been
stored at the back of the garage gathering dust, the odometer currently showing
11,434 miles. We did note that the VIN plate on the bulkhead has
different car and engine numbers to the chassis and engine numbers quoted on the
V5C and reproduced at the top of this listing (see
photo).
Recently got running again,
it has been starting promptly and running sweetly as we have moved it around on
site, with good 50psi oil pressure. Having been in storage for a lengthy period,
it will doubtless benefit from a thorough service/check-over before returning to
the road once more.
