Description
Restored
about 15 years ago including fully rebuilt engine and only 3,500 miles since;
current owner 8 years; new mohair hood; loads of bills; a super example of
this classic Italian sportscar
Launched in 1966 with Alfa’s wonderful twin-cam 1600cc engine, the
Pininfarina-styled Giulia Sprint Spider was destined for greatness from the
outset, its success being hastened when it shot to fame in the 1967 film ‘The
Graduate’ starring Dustin Hoffman.
The original
'boat-tail' design of the Duetto was dropped in 1970 in favour of a more
aerodynamically efficient Kamm tail which also usefully improved luggage space.
The underpinnings were effectively the same as the superb Giulia saloon, so
beloved of the Italian Carabinieri, comprising independent front suspension,
coil-suspended live rear axle, servo-assisted disc brakes all round and
wonderfully communicative steering.
More
engines were added to the list of options, the most powerful being the torquey
132bhp 2-litre unit found in the Spider Veloce, giving it a top speed of 119mph
and a 0-60mph time of less than 10 seconds.
A
refreshing change from the usual Alfa red, this particular 1977 Spider Veloce
looks most appealing in Ivory White with a black interior. From 2004 – 2015 it
was owned by a gentleman in Suffolk who spent around £12,000 on the car early in
his ownership.
This included bodywork repairs
and a full respray followed by waxoil protection. The engine was fully rebuilt
with new pistons, liners, bearings, reground crank, new valves and valve seat
inserts, carbs rebuilt, new clutch, starter motor etc, old MOTs showing that it
has only covered around 3,500 miles since. The suspension was also rebuilt with
new springs and bushes all round. The brake system was overhauled with new discs
and a host of other jobs attended to.
Our
vendor acquired the car in 2015 and has continued to look after it well with
bills for over £6,000 during his ownership. Apart from regular servicing these
include: a new fuel tank; gearbox mountings; wheel bearings; brake pads; door
locks; door windows and quarterlights; Perspex headlight covers; carpets; seat
repairs; waxoil treatment; new brown mohair hood etc.
The car was rolling road tuned in 2016, the dyno sheet showing that
it produced 110bhp and 120lb/ft and it has only covered 1,200 miles since. An
owner’s handbook and a workshop manual are also included. Our vendor and the
previous owner both kept the Alfa in Carcoon storage with constant air flow,
hence the good state of preservation today.
Driven to the sale from Shropshire, it has been starting promptly
and running beautifully as we have moved it around on site with good 60psi oil
pressure. Although it no longer needs one, it has an MOT until April 2024 with
no advisories recorded.
A really super Spider
all round with much money spent in all the right places, it will be a wonderful
car to cruise around in over the long hot summer that surely lies ahead of
us.
