Lot Ended
Description
A
fascinating slice of immediate post-war austerity, the Lloyd was not Welsh
as one might assume, but was supplied by West Germany's second largest car
manufacturer.
Hansa-Lloyd was formed by the merging of two companies in
1914 - both initially truck manufacturers. Borgward took over in 1929 and
the Lloyd marque remained dormant until 1950 when Borgward announced a new
small car offering more comfort than a scooter in a package smaller and cheaper
than a Volkswagen. After the war, there was a stong demand for small cars and if
produced by a second company, they were allocated more steel.
The Lloyd 600 had a three speed gearbox with
a two-cylinder four-stroke air-cooled engine of 596cc producing some
19hp at 4,500rpm driving through the front wheels and a top speed of about
63mph. Front suspension used two transversely mounted overlapping leaf springs
supported by telescopic shock absorbers, while the rear wheels were attached to
a swing axle with longitudinally mounted leaf springs. Steering was by rack-
and- pinion with drum brakes all round. Over 176,00 Lloyd 600’s were
produced.
The company sold them accross the globe, producing them in RHD
for the Australian and British markets. This very rare 1957 RHD Lloyd 600
is one of the very few imported to the UK from Germany and was first registered
in April 1957.
It had one
owner for 35 years, with 30 of these seeing the car in storage. It was then
displayed in a Lincolnshire Museum in the early 2000’s before being
thoroughly restored. The car
comes with a lot of paperwork and a large amount of spares from another car
which are in store near Hereford to be collected.
Photos on file show how
much has been done, and although it has not run for a year or two,
it shouldn't need much more than fresh fuel to get it
motoring once more.
There are also some super original
brochures, stickers and road tests etc, as well as hand books and even an
original service book too. There is an active club catering for them which
ensures a ready spares supply and at over 60mpg there is a lot to like
about this charming throwback to a past age.
