Description
Rare model only made for 18 months; one of only around 50 known to
survive; good running order
Launched in
1938, the Morris 12/4 Series III was a big improvement on the Series II largely
due to its 41bhp 1,548cc engine which was now overhead-valve rather than
side-valve and had a cross-flow cylinder head (the same engine was also used in
the MG VA and the Wolseley 12/48). The 4-speed gearbox also gained better
synchromesh and electrics were uprated to 12v. Contemporary road tests singled
out the hydraulic brakes and the light, direct steering for particular praise,
recording a top speed of 70mph.
Due to the
outbreak of war in 1939, the Series III was only made in very limited numbers
and according to the Series III Register, only 53 are known to survive
today.
As the Heritage Certificate confirms,
this Morris 12/4 was built in March 1938. Nothing is known of the car’s early
history but from 1992 – 2020 it was owned by a Morris Owner’s Club member who
sympathetically restored the car including retrimming the interior and the
sliding sunroof and replacing the boot floor and the rear
springs.
Our vendor acquired the car in 2020
and reports that it runs and drives well, cruising happily at 50mph with another
15mph on tap if you are in a hurry! It has certainly been starting promptly and
running very sweetly indeed as we have moved it around on site, with good 60psi
oil pressure.
As you can see in the photos, the
car looks very presentable although the headlining has a few holes above the
rear seats and the paint finish, while acceptable, is not as glossy as it could
be.
