Description
Recent service and gearbox overhaul; a smart example of this
lightweight vintage tourer
Only in production
from 1929 – 1930, the Humber 9/28 was an improved version of the 9/20 and was
very much a ‘big car in miniature’. Like the 9/20 it had Humber’s new 1,056cc
inlet-over-exhaust engine which had replaced the previous side-valve units in
1923. The gearbox was a three-speed unit with a cone clutch, bevel axle and
semi-elliptic suspension. Front brakes were adopted from 1927
onwards.
First registered in Coventry in March
1929, this Humber sadly comes with no history whatsoever apart from a V5C and
four old MOTs issued between 2002 and 2010. Our vendor acquired the car at
auction in 2020 when it was catalogued as a Humber 14/40 but this is clearly
incorrect and he believes that it is in fact a 9/28. The V5C records the engine
capacity as 825cc but again this is almost certainly incorrect and it is most
likely 1,056cc.
Our vendor kept himself amused
during lockdown by working on the car, including rebuilding the gearbox, giving
it a good service and tidying it up cosmetically. He also found a fair amount of
confetti in the car, so it has perhaps been a wedding car in the not-too-distant
past. He reports that it now runs and drives well but a recent knee operation
means that he can no longer drive the car comfortably, hence its appearance in
this sale. It comes with a hood and sidescreens, all in good
condition.
As you can see in the photos and the
video, the car looks very presentable and has been starting easily and running
well as we have moved it around on site.
