This most attractive Mulliner-bodied Fixed Head Coupe
is best described by Lanchester's promotional material of the
time....
'The exterior lines of this car are worthy of study because of
the perfect symmetry and balance that has been attained throughout. There is no
freakish exageration of proportion, while at the same time there is a definite
impression of grace and speed'....well said we say!!
At £325 they were
not cheap, especially for a 10hp car, but quality never is! The large history
file for this car comes with hours of reading and tells you everything you need
to know.
The file includes a buff logbook showing its first owner as a
Miss Du Cane of Pulburgh. Apparently she was chaufffered around in the car,
keeping it until 1956.
It remained in and around the London/Hampshire
area, a Continuation logbook confirming that by 1979 when the new style logbooks
came along, it was converted to Not Licenced....presumably off the road awaiting
work.
It was regularly MOTd from 1984 on, our vendor acquiring it from a
friend in 2019 just pre-lockdown.
He spent freely on its restoration,
starting with a £1,400 bill from Richards Bros in Cardiff on wheels and tyres, a
stainless exhaust was added and then the car was entrusted to those excellent
chaps at Bruce Young coachworks. Over the next two years, the body was
extensively rebuilt and repainted, with nearly £16,000 spent during this time -
easily done and very nicely executed...
A new bespoke wiring loom was
added by Vehicle Wiring Services and new leather was carefully crafted into the
seat squabs by Mel Weaver. After £1,104 of rechroming, the total restoration
bill came to a whisker over £27,321....and it looks well-spent.
All bills
are on file and the car comes complete with badges on the badge
bar and a few tools etc in the handy luggage locker.
Fitted with a
pre-selector gearbox, we are advised that a rear gearbox seal has given up the
ghost - not a big job, but too much for the vendor who is recuperating from his
second new knee....
Starting on the button and running and driving on
site, a few hours work should fix the seal and it is ready for the
road.
