Description
Recent nut-and-bolt rebuild and only 1,200 miles
since; new galvanised chassis and galvanised bulkhead; new tyres;
LED lights; USB port; all new electrics; petrol engine; a rejuvenated
S3 ready for action
First
registered in October 1971, this Land Rover S3 88” comes with a huge file of
bills which show that it was treated to a nut-and-bolt restoration between 2010
and 2013. The full extent of the work carried out is far too detailed to list in
full here, but rest assured it was an extremely thorough job with thousands
spent on parts alone.
To list just a few of the
highlights, it was fitted with a new galvanised chassis and a hot dipped
refurbished galvanised bulkhead. The chassis was built up with a new parabolic
spring set and gas shocks all round. A new prop shaft was also fitted.
The body was restored and repainted with new
door bottoms both sides, new rear Safari door and new door locks. All the window
glazing was renewed with new rubbers, felts and seals. New wing stay
brackets were fitted all round along with a new fuel tank, new front bumper and
new front grille.
All the electrics are new
with LED lights all round and a USB port on the dash. It also received a new
clutch kit, new Weber 34 ICH carb and all new ignition system. A set of 5 new
Cooper Discovery tyres were also fitted plus much else
besides.
Old MOTs and SORN
certificates imply that the vehicle was then laid up from 2014 – 2019 when
another £3,680 was spent on new parts to get it through an MOT. These included
all new brake drums and shoes; new brake pipes; new hub bearings and hub
assemblies; new wheel cylinders; new stub axles; new track rod ends; new
steering idler and relay; complete new exhaust system; full geometry check; full
service including engine and gearbox oil change and new brake
fluid.
Nine old MOTs show that the vehicle has
covered around 27k miles since 2001 but only 1,200 miles since the restoration
was completed in 2013. The last MOT expired in November 2020 with no advisories
recorded and it has only covered a few miles since so it may benefit from a
precautionary check-over before any long journeys are undertaken. Classed as a
Historic Vehicle, it is now free to tax and MOT-exempt.
Our vendor acquired the vehicle just over a year ago and reports
that he has barely used it but that it always starts easily even after several
weeks left standing and that the engine (which is believed to have been
overhauled previously) ‘runs like a sewing machine’. It has certainly been
starting promptly and running well as have moved it around on site. A good
quantity of spares are stored in the back, along with a car cover and some seat
covers.
Altogether a very smart-looking and
freshly rejuvenated S3 that doubtless has another 50+ years of useful life ahead
of it.
