Description
Beautiful original interior; very smart condition; well maintained and
in regular use; reluctant sale of this well-presented 'dependable'
Austin
The Austin 12 was launched in 1921, but by the time this
example was built in 1935, it was a far cry from the original.
What it
did share however was the five-bearing
side-valve four, displacing 1,861cc (from 1927) which offered super-smooth
running with reliability like few others. This was sufficient for 40-45mph
cruising, at which speed the 12 returned around 26mpg. Effective four-wheel
brakes meant that the car coped with sudden emergencies better than many of its
contemporary rivals. Enduringly popular and beautifully designed, the 12 remains
a favourite with Austin enthusiasts to this day.
By 1935 it had lost its
traditional chrome radiator surround and adopted the more modern look introduced
to the range when the Ruby came along.
Purchased by our vendor from
Available Austins in 2012, this 1935 12/4 Ascot has been coddled and
enjoyed. The MOT history shows that it has been in light regular use for many
years - always good for an old car because they don't take kindly to standing
still. The last test expired as recently as August 2023, with just one
minor advisory for slight play in a track rod end.
FH Greening &
Sons looked after it for some years, with invoices from 2017 and
2018 for services. In 2019 it had a major overhaul, including new core
plugs, a head skim, exhaust manifold repair and a starter overhaul. Alderton
Austin Services saw it again in 2021 for a service and again in 2022. A final
invoice from Kings Norton Garage for £906 includes removing the gearbox and
replacing both clutch plates, the thrust bearing and a broken clutch
fork.
The car really is in super condition and needs to be seen to be
appreciated.
These big '30s saloons are a bargain at the moment.
Properly maintained by all the right people, this handsome
12/4 is everything an old car sould be and looks like a steal at
the humble guide price suggested.
