Description
Well-known original car in 'oily rag' condition; previous owner for 61
years; running and driving; very sound coachwork; built-in jacking system; scope
for cosmetic improvement; loads of potential; nice history
Launched
in late 1921, the 12 was dubbed 'The Salesman's Joy' due to the way it fairly
flew out of the showroom.
In combination with the 7, it secured Austin's
long term future and remained on sale until 1935 although a taxi version was
still available as late as 1939. During this time the 12 became a by-word for
indestructability thanks to its superb build quality and fundamentally sound
design.
This March 1934 example retains the trademark chrome radiator
surround and is the Berkeley model which features all the luxury items one could
hope for in 1934. Rake adjustable rear seats, map net in the roof, leather
upholstery (of course), folding tables and a built-in jacking system to
mention just a few.
It has had just three registered keepers from new
according to the V5C. Its previous owner acquired it from a friend who had
purchased it new. He often assisted with the car and knew it well. In 1962 it
arrived at his wedding as bridal transport and to his delight was presented to
him and his new wife as a wedding present. They kept it for the next 61
years, our vendor acquiring the car at auction in 2023.
A
regular attendee at Austin meets in Bristol over the years, it is well-known to
Austin enthusiasts, popular for its originality and condition.
The doors
open and shut as if they were no more than a year old, with no signs
of drop. Time has taken its toll on the leather upholstery, although some
careful thought into reworking the front seat squabs and some tender loving care
would bring the interior back to life.
The current owner has dispensed
with the Autovac (still present) and temporarily installed an electric pump. The
car starts quickly and shows good oil pressure and has been driving around on
site nicely, with commendably powerful brakes although doesn't appear to be
charging. The wiring could do with tidying up too, but this is a dependable
Austin which will go on for years and years to come. We love
it!!
