Lot Ended
Description
An
exceptionally nice example of this classic sporting flyweight; restored in 1999
with some choice upgrades and only 2,500 miles since; rebuilt Cosworth 1,650cc
engine
Designed by Lotus founder Colin
Chapman, the Lotus Seven is considered the epitome of the Lotus recipe ‘simplify
and add lightness’.
This Lotus Seven is an early Series 2 car which left
the Lotus factory at Delamare Road, Cheshunt in May 1961. First owned by a Mr
Walsh, it was fitted with cycle-type wheel arches, fibreglass nosecone (as
opposed to the Series 1 aluminium nosecone) and was originally fitted with a
Ford Anglia 105E 997cc engine with twin SU carburettors. A far more punchy
Cosworth 1,650cc engine was fitted during its restoration in 1999.
We do
not have a lot on file from its restoration, however there are photos and an
invoice for an engine rebuild, including forged pistons new bearings, gaskets
etc. There is also an invoice for new body panels but it does not specify
exactly which ones.
A note on file explains the restoration in some
detail and states that it was undertaken by Arch Motors. It included a full
respray; engine bay braced as in the Series 3SS and strengthened with side
impact bars; FIA standard harness mounts and roll bar; Cosworth 1,650cc engine
fitted with twin Weber carbs; a Ford-Lotus four-speed semi close-ratio gearbox;
twin cam alloy bell housing; 7.5 AP racing clutch; TR7 rear differential and
half shafts; Lucas alternator; Spax adjustable shock absorbers; upgraded
wishbones and Cosmic alloy wheels.
Judging by the MOT history, it seems
that the car has only covered 2,454 miles since the restoration was completed.
MOTs were carried out in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, any advisories or
failure points being sorted before a re-test was undertaken.
The
restoration was clearly to a high standard and the car still looks great today.
The large history file includes technical drawings, photographs of the
restoration, magazines and correspondence relating to the car’s previous owners
and history. There are also a handful of more recent invoices including a repair
to the boot cover in February 2012 and a full service including brake fluid
change in January 2012, all work being carried out by Caterham in
Leicester.
Starting promptly and driving nicely on site, this Lotus 7
looks very enticing given its choice upgrades and great colour
scheme.
