Lot Ended
Description
Total body-off restoration between 2000 and 2002 and only 18,500 miles
since; fully rebuilt fast road engine; Weber carbs; alloy wheels; stainless
steel exhaust; huge history file; lots to like!
Dating from 1966, this TR4A
was imported from America in 1994 and has had just three owners since. From 2000
until 2016 it was owned by a Naval Officer with homes in Devon and Belgium who
treated the car to a total body-off rebuild between 2000 and 2002. The full
extent of the work carried out is far too detailed to list in full here, but is
amply documented in dozens of invoices and many photos on file (some of
which are reproduced here).
Virtually every component on
the car was restored or renewed with various upgrades incorporated along the
way. The engine was professionally rebuilt and uprated to fast road spec by Red
Baron Garage of Belgium with new Mahle pistons and liners; all new bearings;
reground crank; weighed and balanced con rods; uprated timing chain and engine
seals; Kent TH5 cams; 9.8:1 compression ratio unleaded head with all new valves
and high lift TT valve springs; nitrided rocker shaft; lightened flywheel etc,
the whole lot being dynamically balanced.
A set of twin Weber 45DCOE
carbs were also fitted along with a stainless steel exhaust system. A
non-overdrive model, the car rides on a set of Minilite-style alloys shod with a
matching set of BF Goodrich tyres. A new vinyl hood was fitted and a
tonneau cover is also present. A Mota-Lita steering wheel completes the sporting
look.
Old MOTs show that the car has
only covered some 18,500 miles since the restoration was completed.
Our vendor acquired the car from the Naval Officer in 2016 and has
covered around 1,500 miles in it since, having it maintained by his son who is a
professional mechanic. He reports that it runs and drives well but has been
barely driven for the last couple of years due to his advancing age which makes
getting in and out not quite so easy as it used to be.
As you can see in the photos, it still looks sharp today, the only
real blemish we noted being some deterioration to the paintwork on the front
left quarter of the bonnet. Starting promptly and running well as we have moved
it around on site, with good 60psi oil pressure and a very sporting exhaust
note, this expertly restored and uprated TR4A now needs an enthusiastic new
owner who can give it the more regular exercise that it
deserves.
