Description
Starts and runs; restoration project recently imported from Belgium;
rare to find in the UK
Volkswagen produced
the Type 181 from 1968 - 1983, mainly for use by the West German
military but civilian versions were also available. These civilian versions were
known as the Kurierwagen in Germany, the Trekker in the UK, and somewhat
bizarrely as the Thing in the United States.
We think this 181
might have been an American ‘Thing’ originally, due to the 180 chassis prefix,
although you will need to make your own minds up on that score. Our vendor
imported it from Belgium in 2022 in the condition that you see
today.
Since then it has been
stored as part of a private collection which is now being thinned out to
free up some much-needed space.
There is obvious work that
needs doing to the hood and the bodywork is not perfect, but we understand
that it does run and it appears to have had a recently fitted fuel
tank, battery and ignition components.
Although not yet
registered in the UK, the NOVA reference number is on file to confirm that
all duties have been paid, along with the proof of purchase and import details,
so getting it registered here should not be an issue via the usual DVLA
procedure.
