Description
Just three owners from new, the current since 1979; lots of
history; 'use and improve' condition; running and driving nicely on
site
Launched in
1936, the 4/4 was Morgan’s first foray into the world of four-wheel transport –
hence the model name denoting four wheels and four cylinders. Apart from a break
during World War II and a short period in the early 1950s, the 4/4 has been in
continuous production ever since.
Engine
capacity increased from the 1,122cc Coventry Climax engine in 1936 to a 1.8
litre Ford engine by 2004. The 4/4 1600 was introduced in 1968 fitted with a
variety of Ford Kent Crossflow engines from 70bhp to 93bhp. A total of 3,513
were built by March 1982, some with two seats and some with
four.
This four-seater 4/4 left the Malvern works
in August 1972 fitted with the 93bhp 1600cc Cortina GT engine mated to a 4-speed
gearbox. Originally a dealer demonstrator, it was registered to Sterling
Carriage Co. of London SW16 until the current keeper acquired it from Morgan
dealers Allon White of Cranfield way back in October 1979.
At this point it had covered 74,738 miles and Allon White fitted it
with a reconditioned engine at the time of purchase, also carrying out various
other jobs including new king pins, work to the steering and a new
subframe.
A good file of invoices show subsequent upkeep, although it doesn’t
seem to have needed much other than routine service items. Parts more recently
fitted include a new radiator and kingpin in 2016 and a new alternator and front
brake calipers in 2020. A full set of weather gear is also present, all in
serviceable condition (hood; side screens; tonneau cover; hood cover).
Barely used for the last few years, we are told
that it was recommissioned shortly before the auction including a new Weber
carburettor, fitment of Accuspark electronic ignition and a new speedo cable.
Said to run and drive well, it has certainly been starting promptly and
running nicely as we have moved it around on site, with good 50psi oil
pressure. It seems likely that it has only done around 35k miles since the
reconditioned engine was fitted.
As you can see
in the photos, this 4/4 is showing its age cosmetically and would
benefit from a repaint and some tidying here and there. Alternatively, you could
just opt for the ‘shabby chic’ look and enjoy it as it is…
