Online Wine and Whisky Auction attracts worldwide interest and sell for over £20,000
A superb collection of Malt Whiskies assembled over many years by a Devon aficionado came under the hammer as part of Brightwells’ October series of online auctions. Much of the collection had been purchased from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and included many rare bottlings from the 1960s and 1970s.
The lady who was selling the collection did so with a heavy heart as the whiskies had been her husband’s pride and joy. What made the day all the more poignant is that it would have been the couples’ 54th wedding anniversary.
The top-priced lot on the day was a 1964 Springbank, one of only a few remaining in the world. Bidding throughout the final day was brisk and the hammer finally fell at £3,250. One of the surprises of the sale was a rare 1966 bottle from the now silent Lochside distillery; this sold at £2,000, double the original estimate.
The sales also featured fine wines from France, Italy, Spain and California; Vintage Port and an excellent selection of rare Champagnes.
6 magnums of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1995 proved very popular with buyers (sold at £4,000), as did a collection of 6 bottles of Chateau Latour from the 1960s (£3,400). The top priced Port lot at the sales was 3 bottles of Quinta do Noval Nacional 2004 (sold at £975).
